One of the two highest magistrates at Rome, consul. (b) used loosely of a consul elect or proconsul. (c) (usu attrib.) proconsul; (normally of an ex-consul whose imperium was extended while he performed the function of provincial governor, etc.). (d) the supreme magistrate elsewhere than at Rome.
As consuls were elected annually the names of the consuls served to denote the year; hence in var. expr., esp. abl. absol.
